Vietnam‘s iconic conical hats 👒 🇻🇳

The so called „nón lá“ (conical hat) is an iconic symbol for Vietnam. Yet, it is far more than a sole accessory or tourist souvenir. Worn for thousands of years, it connects modern Vietnam to its ancient past.

🎋The nón lá is traditionally made from simple, natural materials, such as dried palm leaves which are traditionally flattened with a hot stone, bamboo strips used to shape circular ribs, silk or cotton thread for stitching the leaves onto the frame, and lastly silk or cloth straps ensuring to keep the hat in place.

🕟It takes up 6 to 8hrs to finish one hat by hand. More elaborate versions—like hand-crafted paintings, or the „nón bài thơ“ (hidden poems or extra-fine stitching) can take up to a full day or longer.

🌤️⛈️The hats are not only perfectly designed for Vietnam’s hot sun and monsoon rains; since worn by everyone over centuries, the nón lá became a shared cultural image of the Vietnamese people, which endured until today.

✨ Nara in a Day- 4 Things to Do✨ A quick and convenient escape from Osaka city directly brings you to Nara. A small, serene and unforgettable must-do day trip for your itinerary.

1️⃣ Watch fresh Mochi Pounding at Nakatanidou (every 30min) 🍡

2️⃣ Meet the Sacred Deer in Nara Park; friendly and cheeky, roaming around freely. Bow, and they bow back! 🦌

3️⃣ Explore Ancient Temples & Shrines: from towering wooden halls to peaceful pathways in the middle of the forest, uncountable places, including gardens, can be visited (mostly for a small entrance fee). Todai-ji, Kofuku-ji or Kasuga Shrine are only a few examples to mention. Play attention to photo taking rules and behave appropriately in respective premises. 🏛️

4️⃣ Dive into the world of Buddhism by visiting the free-of-charge exhibition at Nara National Museum. Taking the escalator one floor down from the actual museum entrance directly leads you to a fascinating interactive showroom with lots of background knowledge regarding Buddhism, its sacred figures, gestures, postures, clothing and connected meanings. 🪷

🌳🎋Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is stated as one of the major tourist attractions when visiting Kyoto. Located north of the city, at the foot of “storm mountains”, the city is a famous tourist magnet, flooded with visitors of all ages.

⁉️Is it worth a visit?
🛑To me personally it’s not a must-see. Why? Because it is “just another forest with bamboo”. Yes, the path you walk along is beautiful but also quite short and nothing special if you’ve seen bamboo before.
Since I have seen and walked through several bamboo areas and gardens before, eg in Hawaii, Arashiyama was “nice to see” but certainly not a “must-see” place.

Considering the time you spend getting to- and back from Arashiyama, also taking into consideration how much time you are planing on staying in kyoto, I’d recommend to focus on other sightseeing attractions first to not lose too much time.

If you go 👇

🔹If you would like to enjoy a peaceful and less hectic experience, I recommend to visit Arashiyama very early in the morning around 6- 8am, as past these times the number of visitors sequentially increases to a point where you cannot even walk anymore through the forests.

🔹The park is open 24/7 and admission is free.

🔹Once walking downhill, cross the “Togetsukyo Bridge”, which is one of Arashiyama’s most known landmarks. Stroll through several souvenir shops and restaurants. You can also rent a bike or boat on a sunny day 🛶

🔹Most temples in the surrounding areas require entrance fees; the same applies for monkey park, if you want to stop by.
In case you are planning on visiting the famous “moss temple”, you are required to make a reservation in advance 1 day up to two weeks.

🥊Honour Muay Thai: 2-Week training camp in Ao Nang, Krabi

In September this year I have made a long desired wish come true by trying out the Marshall arts of Muay Thai. And what better place to pick is there to experience an authentic training camp than Thailand?

⛺️ Honour Muay Thai is a camp located in Ao Nang, Krabi with a great facility for students to practice, learn and jointly grow their skills from beginners to professionals. All fitness levels are welcome and taken care of individually, with passion, dedication, lots of sweat and a pinch of fun and laughter.

💪🏻You start your mornings at 07:30am with a 3- 5km run or rope skipping prior to training for 1,5 hours individually (shadow boxing, bag work), with trainers (patch work, technique) and of course with sparring partners (sparring, clinching, boxing, conditioning). Each training is ended with 100 sit-ups & 100 push-ups. The afternoon session starts at 03:30pm and follows a similar pattern.

🏋️‍♀️ Sounds tough? It was. But more importantly it was fun, enriching and one of the best times of my life! Not only was I able to meet plenty of heart-warming people in the camp, also the team of trainers embraced my beginner level from day 1 onwards, showing empathy, patience and taking their time for me to being pushed out of my way to perform better day by day.

I was able to learn and set the basic techniques, such as foot work, punches, elbows and kicks. Even if there’s still a long way to go to enter the ring at some point, I am super proud of my progress and will continue this exciting journey in the months to follow.

If you ever think about trying Muay Thai yourself, I highly recommend the “Honour Muay Thai” training camp as a place to go! I promise you, you will not want to leave again, directly feeling home and being connected to the great people and community you will find on-site.

An everlasting unforgettable memory I truly treasure 🙏

Kubuqi Desert.

In line with my recent blog post about my top 3 sightseeing recommendations in Inner Mongolia, Kubuqi Desert certainly is a place to not miss out on.

Located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, Kubuqi Desert is the seventh-largest desert in the country. Covering an area of approximately 18,600 square kilometers, it lies to the south of the Yellow River and is part of the Ordos Plateau.

From camel riding, sand boarding, jeep tours or simply walking through the endless width of golden sand dunes, Kubuqi Desert should definitely be on your bucket list when traveling Inner Mongolia! Kubuqi Desert.

In line with my recent blog post about my top 3 sightseeing recommendations in Inner Mongolia, Kubuqi Desert certainly is a place to not miss out on.

Located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, Kubuqi Desert is the seventh-largest desert in the country. Covering an area of approximately 18,600 square kilometers, it lies to the south of the Yellow River and is part of the Ordos Plateau.

From camel riding, sand boarding, jeep tours or simply walking through the endless width of golden sand dunes, Kubuqi Desert should definitely be on your bucket list when traveling Inner Mongolia! Hong Kong has a great variety of sightseeing attractions and scenic spots to visit and discover. With over 263 islands, 18 districts and a total of three main regions, Hong Kong is worth exploring and taking one’s time.

If I was to break it down to the top sights you shall definitely not miss out on, the nine points below are the must do’s and see’s to cover, especially when not having sufficient time:

📸 Climb up the breathtaking staircase walk of the golden “Ten thousand Buddha Monastery” and reward yourself with a breathtaking scenic view

📸 Discover Japanese garden architecture at “Nan Lian Garden”

Shanghai as a futuristic, annually growing metropolis has more to offer than one might think! Here are some must- do’s and sees I highly recommend when visiting:

📍Wander along the beautiful scenery of “the Bund”, enjoying breathtaking skyline views of Pudong. Jump into one of the nightly “Huangpu River Cruises” for an additional water sight of the illuminated buildings at night.

📍Go on top of the landmark of Shanghai, the “Oriental Pearl Tower” to visit the observatory desk from which you have a birdseye view on Shanghai’s skyline. Enjoy a cocktail at the bar and take “the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel” as a return ticket to Pungxi.

📍Plan some time for visiting some of the well-preserved temple complexes, such as “Longhua Temple”, “Jadebuddha Temple” and “Jing a Temple”. Discover some of the multiple-existing gods and their guardians, observe praying rituals and enjoy local temple foods if you have time.

📍Plan a day trip to one of the four water villages being situated in rural, peaceful areas, giving a different perspective to the crowded and accelerated city life, such as “Zhujiajiao” and “Suzhou”. Hop on a sampan boat and/or bike rickshaw and wander the streets for street foods and souvenir shops.

📍Deep-dive into cultural heritage, history and ancient architecture by visiting traditional Chinese garden complexes, museums and creative parks, such as “M50 Creative Park”, “Jing’an Sculpture Park”. Explore the former “French Concession” and the “Memorial Hall of the Site of First National Congress Community Party of China”.

📍Immerse into countless shopping opportunities by visiting some malls and shopping miles, such as “Tianzifang”, “Xintiandi” (car- free zone) and “Yuyuan Garden”. Taste your way through several local dishes, teas and snacks, have a beer in one of the pubs and enjoy heavenly meals in one of the mall food courts to be with the locals.

📍Book, discover and try the convenient transportation infrastructure; whether this means taking the metro, a high-speed train, the maglav to get from one place to another without being stuck in traffic.

47km from Shanghai lies the beautiful water town Zhujiajiao, which is known for its winding stone alleys, bridges and water canals from the Qing and Ming dynasties.

Easily reachable be metro (take line 17), bus or taxi, you will be able to spend a fantastic time in one of the best-preserved water towns close to Shanghai!

Take a walk along north street, walk over several out of 36 bridges, visit the brilliantly preserved gardens and temples, have a look into the old architecture, stroll through multiple souvenir- and food shops and take a local boat to see the city from the water.

📍A day visit to Zhujiajiao? 📍
Good choice!

Due to over 70 historically well-preserved gardens and great art of garden architecture, some gardens have been announced UNESCO heritage sites. Recommended visits are, amongst others, the “Humble Administrator’s Garden” & “Lion Grove Garden”.

Don’t miss out on joining a water canal tour by 🛶 , enjoying the beautiful scenery of your surroundings whilst being accompanied by local songs from your boat driver. Enjoy local cuisine, such as the “squirrel-mandarin-fish” 🎣 and wander through the countless tourist shops amongst the river. Ensure to pre-book entrance tickets during peak season to avoid long queuing in front of entrance gates 🎟️

From Shanghai you can simply book a high speed train from either Shanghai station or Shanghai Hongqiao. Trains run every 5-10 min and will bring you to your destination in 30- 40mins only🚆

Taiwan: the heart of Asia 🇹🇼

A country lined with splendor of color, cultural diversity, warm- hearted people, scenic beauty and unique delicacies. Deep green forests, frequent rain falls followed by waves of heat and humidity, fishing villages, beaches and developing bigger cities, Taiwan combines the best of everything. Yet not too well-known amongst travelers, I can only express my dearest recommendation to consider this wonderful place as a next-to-explore bucket list country!

Taiwan: the heart of Asia 🇹🇼

A country lined with splendor of color, cultural diversity, warm- hearted people, scenic beauty and unique delicacies. Deep green forests, frequent rain falls followed by waves of heat and humidity, fishing villages, beaches and developing bigger cities, Taiwan combines the best of everything. Yet not too well-known amongst travelers, I can only express my dearest recommendation to consider this wonderful place as a next-to-explore bucket list country!

The Muslim Quarter, also known as Huimin Jie, is the most famous snack- and souvenir street you will find in Xi’an, shaanxi province.

Important to mention is that we are not talking about one or two streets, rather several blocks of interconnected roads offering a variety of street foods to share, or even better, eat your way solo through. You will also find several mosques to discover and explore along the way.

When choosing food, you will most likely be overwhelmed by the choices to pick from but that’s okay- choose whatever looks most appealing to you! The amount of available delicacies to try would probably take you over one month. Usually, the longest lines are the best- or most local foods you would want to go for. There are also several smaller restaurants to sit in if you do not want to eat while walking. And in case you are not sure what to get in the end, just ask a local in one the restaurants to help you out; people are super welcoming and helpful. I’m sure you’ll find amazing new and differing tasty dishes to fall in love with.

Go best at night to enjoy the illuminated sign boards and smell in the variety of freshly prepared dishes.
